Discover Woking From Home: Your Guide to Simple, Soulful Chinese Flavors & The Art of Chinese Home Style Cooking
Welcome to Woking From Home, a dedicated resource for authentic Chinese home-style cooking.
The TL;DR
Woking From Home is a digital kitchen diary dedicated to demystifying Chinese home cooking.
Whether you’re a busy professional trying to beat the after-work takeout / “dapao” / grab cycle, the weekend Snorlex craving for some comfort food, or a parent looking to expand the family menu without breaking the bank, you’re in the right place. We aim to bring you clear, visually driven recipes that focus on three core pillars: Steaming, Stir-frying, and Braising, underpinned by the philosophy that they should be simple, easy to make, and deliver more value than eating out.
The Story: From Cantonese Roots to Northern Flavors
This blog started as a personal digital diary—a way to collect and share the recipes and techniques I’ve discovered over a lifetime of eating. I grew up in a Singaporean Cantonese household where the sound of a sizzling wok was the soundtrack to every evening and the smell of my mother’s homemade soup signalled dinner-time.
Over the years, my culinary “research” expanded from local Singaporean home-cooked food and the usual hawker or Chinese restaurant staples to a much broader map. My wife hails from Northern China, which introduced me to a whole new world of hearty dumplings, bold vinegars, and wheat-based wonders. Combine that with a slight obsession with Netflix cooking shows, and you get the melting pot of recipes found here.
Why "Woking From Home"?
Let’s be real: dining out in major cities like Singapore is getting… expensive. We’re all feeling the pinch of rising restaurant prices, and honestly, the “healthy” options at the food court aren’t always that healthy.
I wanted to take back control—of my wallet, my health, and my dinner table. I realized that Chinese cooking often looks intimidating (the high flames! the mysterious sauces! the speed!), but it doesn’t have to be. My goal is to demystify the complexity. If you can boil water and chop an onion, you can cook a restaurant-quality meal at home for a fraction of the price.
Who Is This For?
I’ve designed these recipes to address four groups of people:
Busy Professionals: You need a step-by-step that actually works after a long day. No fluff, just simple and ready to go.
The Foodies: You want to know the science behind the steam and you’re willing to put in the time for that perfect braise.
The Moms & Dads: You need reliable, kid-approved dishes that make you look like a hero without spending four hours in the kitchen.
The Budget-Conscious Cook: Whether you’re retired or just being smart with your money, I’ll show you how to turn simple market ingredients into a feast that looks (and tastes) like a million bucks.
What You Can Expect
Zero Gatekeeping: I share the tips and “secret” sauces that usually stay hidden in grandma’s kitchen.
Visual Step-by-Steps: I’m big on visuals. If a recipe is confusing to look at, it’s confusing to cook. I keep things aesthetically pleasing and easy to follow.
A “Golden Hour” Vibe: Cooking should be relaxing. I hope the warm tones and blonde wood aesthetic of this site make you feel like you’re just hanging out in my kitchen with a drink in hand.
Let’s Get Cooking
For now, this is a hobby project—a labor of love and a collection of my favorite bites. We’re not here to sell you a 12-piece knife set or a “masterclass.” We just want to see more people enjoying the process of making their own food.
Take a look around, find a dish that speaks to you, and let’s get to wok!
If you find a dish that intrigues or inspires you, have more questions or want to reach out, drop us a note using the form on our contact us page and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
